STRATA Geosystems products in Sabah and Sarawak.
Sister company Starwall Sdn Bhd holds the STRATA Geosystems appointment for Malaysia; Infraconcrete Construction Sdn Bhd is the CIDB G7 installer. Project-specific mobilisation to Borneo with stock holding at Kuching and Kota Kinabalu via STRATA logistics chain. Coverage across Sabah (Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Keningau, Beaufort, Kudat, Semporna, Ranau, Tuaran, Papar) and Sarawak (Kuching, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Limbang, Kapit, Mukah, Lawas). Specialism in peat embankment basal reinforcement and Pan Borneo Highway corridor works. Full STRATA Geosystems product range.
Pan Borneo Highway, peat, and mining.
Sabah and Sarawak host distinctive soil and project profiles. Coastal and lower-interior Sarawak (Bintulu, Miri, Sibu) sits on extensive peat deposits (sometimes 5-15 m thick), requiring high-strength basal reinforcement (StrataTex HSR PET woven 200-800 kN/m grades) for road and platform construction. Sabah's Crocker Range carries steep weathered slopes vulnerable to rainfall-triggered failure; East Sabah (Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu) hosts agricultural and mining operations.
Sabah additionally sits in a moderate-seismicity zone (PGA approximately 0.05-0.10g for most areas, higher near Ranau and the East Sabah Park region), requiring explicit seismic check on MSE walls and other reinforced soil structures.
STRATA products on Borneo projects:
- Pan Borneo Highway corridor: extensive geosynthetic-reinforced embankments over peat (StrataTex HSR woven 400-800 kN/m basal mats), StrataGrid Biaxial under sub-base on weak subgrade, StrataDrain in subsurface drainage.
- Mining tailings storage facilities (gold, copper, and other operations in Sabah and Sarawak) with HDPE geomembrane primary liner + GCL composite + StrataDrain leachate collection.
- Crocker Range hillside developments in Sabah with MSE walls and StrataWeb vegetated facing.
- Plantation access roads across both states (oil palm plantation network) using StrataGrid Biaxial + nonwoven separator over weak peat subgrade.
- Bintulu SCORE industrial belt using full range for platform construction over alluvial soft ground.
State authority practice and project mobilisation.
- JKR Cawangan (Sabah and Sarawak): JKR-SPJ Section 7 specifications adapted for Borneo conditions including peat embankment design.
- State PWD (Jabatan Kerja Raya Sabah / Sarawak) for state-level roadworks.
- DBKK, DBKU (Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu / Kuching Utara) for hillside development.
- DOE Cawangan for mining tailings and landfill liner approvals.
- Logistics: stock-holding at STRATA regional depots in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu via Starwall's distribution chain; sea-freight to Borneo for project-specific heavy grades. Lead times typically 2-4 weeks for common grades, 6-12 weeks for heavy basal mat grades.
- Mobilisation: Infraconcrete project teams mobilise to Borneo for medium-large works (typically projects above RM 5 million).
Where high-strength geotextile matters most.
Peat (organic soft soil with high water content) is one of the most challenging substrates for embankment construction. Sabah and Sarawak peat deposits are extensive and often deep (5-15 m, occasionally more); the soil has very low shear strength (su 3-10 kPa typical) and high compressibility. Without basal reinforcement, embankment fills tend to fail by lateral spreading (mud-wave at toes, central settlement, surface heaving).
The standard engineering response combines StrataTex HSR woven PET basal mat (typically 400-800 kN/m wide-width grade) with vertical drains (PVDs) for consolidation. The basal mat handles construction-stage lateral force per Rowe-Soderman analysis; the PVDs accelerate consolidation over the design service life. This combined system is the working spec for Pan Borneo Highway sections over peat and similar plantation/industrial projects.
For specific peat embankment design, see the geotextile design guide and road base reinforcement design guide.
