Sabah is geologically among the most varied states in Malaysia. The Crocker Range backbone runs north-south parallel to the West Coast, generating substantial highland terrain around Kota Kinabalu, Tambunan, Keningau, and Ranau. The interior is dominated by oil palm plantations on undulating terrain. The East Coast (Sandakan-Lahad Datu-Tawau corridor) sees substantial monsoon rainfall and recurrent slope failures.
