01 / What is a geotechnical contractor

The geotech specialist between consulting engineer and earthmoving.

A geotechnical contractor (or geotech contractor in the Malaysia industry shorthand) is a specialist construction firm focused on the engineering of soil and rock - slopes, foundations, retaining structures, ground improvement. We sit between the consulting engineer (who designs) and the main contractor (who builds buildings) - the people who actually install soil nails, drill rock anchors, spray shotcrete, build MSE walls, drive sheet piles, and execute the geotech scope of any major development.

A geotech specialist firm differs from a general civil contractor in three ways: (1) specialist plant fleet - drilling rigs, grout pumps, shotcrete units, dynamic compaction equipment owned in-house; (2) specialist crews - soil-nail teams, shotcrete crews, sheet-pile teams trained on this scope only; (3) specialist standards compliance - BS 8006, BS 8081, EN 1537, FHWA-NHI-14-007, AASHTO, JKR Slope Specifications native. We don't subcontract this scope; we are the geotechnical contractor.

Slope works

Slope stabilization, slope reinforcement, slope repair, slope rectification - soil nails, rock bolts, guniting / shotcrete facing, horizontal drains, rockfall barriers, rock netting. Class I-IV slopes per JKR.

Retaining systems

Reinforced earth (MSE/RE) walls, modular concrete blocks, RC cantilever walls, sheet piling, soldier piles, anchored walls, gabion walls. To BS 8002, BS 8004, BS EN 1997 (Eurocode 7).

Ground improvement

Dynamic compaction, vibroflotation reference, wick drains, surcharge consolidation, subsoil drainage. For weak alluvial / peat sites.

Geotech investigation

Borehole programmes, in-situ testing, lab classification, ground-water observation. SI report deliverables in JKR / Eurocode submission format.

Land creation + earthworks

Cut-and-fill platforms, embankment construction, slope cutting and trimming, drainage networks. Bulk earthworks where geotech compliance matters.

Specialist drilling

Rotary, rotary-percussive, down-the-hole hammer drilling for soil nails, rock anchors, dewatering wells, instrumentation. Calibrated grouting protocol per spec.

What does a CIDB G7 grade mean? +
CIDB G7 is the highest of 7 grades for Malaysian construction contractors, set by Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). G7 firms can tender for projects of any size, public or private. Lower grades (G1-G6) have project value caps. We hold G7 with multiple specialty categories (B04, CE01/06/08/21/36, M15) covering the full geotech + civil + earthworks scope.
What's the value of in-house delivery vs subcontracting? +
In-house: drilling crews, grout plant, shotcrete crews, supervisors, engineers all employed by Infraconcrete - no subcontract chains. Programme holds because there's no inter-vendor coordination. Quality consistent because the same crews repeat across projects. Direct accountability for execution. Subcontracted delivery has more layers, more handoffs, more risk of programme + quality drift.
Do you only do design-build, or also work under appointed consultant? +
Both. Design-build: we lead the geotech design + execution end-to-end (developers, federal agencies appoint us direct). Specialist contractor: we execute under your appointed consulting engineer''s design (consulting engineers appoint us as the geotech specialist). Both modes are routine.
