StrataDrain PVD in Malaysia.
StrataDrain PVD is the STRATA Geosystems Prefabricated Vertical Drain engineered to accelerate consolidation of saturated soft clay soils. Reduces settlement time from years to months. Polypropylene core in corrugated or fishbone structure, wrapped with non-woven polyester or polypropylene filter fabric. IS 17371 certified (CM/L-7100021778). Standard solution for Malaysian land reclamation, embankment preload, port hardstanding, industrial pad consolidation. Supplied by Starwall Sdn Bhd (sole STRATA Geosystems Asia distributor). Installed by Infraconcrete, CIDB G7 + ISO 9001:2015.
From years to months.
Without PVD, soft clay consolidates by vertical drainage through the clay itself. For a typical Malaysian marine clay deposit 10-30 m thick, that takes 5-20 years. The structural development above must wait. With PVD at design grid spacing, the drainage path is reduced from tens of metres of clay to a single horizontal metre or less: pore water flows horizontally a short distance to the nearest PVD, then vertically up the PVD core to the surface drainage blanket. Consolidation time drops from years to months (typically 3-12 months depending on clay properties and preload). Combined with surcharge preload, the PVD programme delivers a stable platform ready for permanent works in a single operating season.
What you are buying.
| Property | Specification |
|---|---|
| Core material | Polypropylene (PP) extrusion |
| Core structure options | Corrugated (high flow cross-section) or fishbone (alternative rigidity profile) |
| Filter fabric | Non-woven polyester (PET) or polypropylene (PP) |
| Filter pore size | Matched to local clay grain distribution to prevent fines ingress while allowing free water flow |
| Certification | IS 17371 (Indian Standard PVD); CM/L-7100021778 (BIS certification number per STRATA brochure) |
| Discharge capacity | Per project specification, supplied with mill certificate and discharge test data |
| Typical installation depth | 10-30 m into soft clay |
| Typical grid spacing | 1.0-2.0 m triangular or square per Terzaghi-Barron consolidation design |
Six primary Malaysian use cases.
| Application | Profile |
|---|---|
| Land reclamation | Coastal reclamation across Selangor (Klang, Westports), Penang, Johor (PTP, Iskandar), Sabah (Kota Kinabalu), Sarawak (Bintulu, Tanjung Manis) where soft marine clay underlies reclaimed platform. |
| Highway embankment preload | Federal and state road embankments through soft soil corridors. Standard JKR and PLUS scope on coastal alignments. |
| Industrial pad preload | Oil and gas, LNG, petrochemical, refinery sites on reclaimed or soft soil platforms. |
| Container terminal and port hardstanding | Heavy crane and stacking loading on soft clay foundation. |
| Storage tank pad | Water reservoir, fuel tank, chemical tank foundation preload before tank installation. |
| Building foundation preload | Shallow foundation buildings on soft clay where post-construction settlement would exceed tolerance. |
Eight-step process.
- Working platform. Granular sand drainage blanket 0.5-1.0 m thick over the soft soil. Supports the installation rig and acts as horizontal drainage layer for PVD discharge.
- PVD set-out. Design grid (1.0-2.0 m triangular or square) marked across the site.
- Rig deployment. Crawler-mounted mast rig with mandrel; PVD spool feed.
- Mandrel insertion. PVD threaded through mandrel; mandrel driven vertically into soft clay to design depth (10-30 m); PVD anchored at the base with anchor plate.
- Mandrel withdrawal. Mandrel withdrawn leaving PVD in place.
- Cut-off. PVD cut at sand blanket level for connection to horizontal drainage.
- Repeat across grid. Production rate 1,000-3,000 m of PVD per rig per shift typical.
- Surcharge preload + monitoring. Sand or rock fill to design preload elevation; settlement monitored via settlement plates and pneumatic piezometers; preload removed when target consolidation degree achieved.
