StrataBase · Extruded PP rigid biaxial · Road base + railway + airport + embankment

StrataBase biaxial geogrid in Malaysia.

StrataBase is the STRATA Geosystems extruded polypropylene rigid biaxial geogrid for structural reinforcement of paved and unpaved roads, railway ballast, airport runways, and embankments on weak soils. Aperture interlock with granular fill plus high tensile strength in two orthogonal directions reduces granular base thickness 25-50 percent, extends pavement maintenance cycles, and supports trafficking over otherwise unusable weak subgrade. Supplied in Malaysia by Starwall Sdn Bhd (sole STRATA Geosystems Asia distributor). Installed by Infraconcrete Construction Sdn Bhd, CIDB G7 + ISO 9001:2015.

How it works

Two reinforcement mechanisms.

MechanismEffect
Aperture interlock with granular fillAggregate particles partially penetrate the rigid apertures and lock against the ribs, transferring load from the granular layer into the geogrid plane through frictional and mechanical interlock.
Membrane tension reinforcementHigh tensile modulus in two orthogonal directions resists tension under wheel or embankment loading, distributing concentrated load across a larger footprint and reducing stress on the underlying subgrade.
Catenary support at embankment baseWhen placed at the base of an earth embankment over weak foundation, StrataBase sustains catenary tension under embankment self-weight plus loading, allowing construction without prior subgrade improvement.
Eight applications

Where StrataBase is the right answer.

ApplicationProfile
Road and railway embankments over weak soilsAlternative to expensive and time-consuming soil stabilisation or soil replacement. Allows construction over residual soil, marsh, soft clay foundations.
Highway maintenance cyclesReduces granular base thickness, extends through-life pavement maintenance, reduces operational cost.
Airport runways, aprons, taxiwaysReinforced base supporting heavy aircraft loading.
Parking lots, industrial and commercialTruck and tanker terminals, container yards, industrial hardstanding.
Construction laydown areas, container terminalsParticularly on reclaimed marsh land where subgrade improvement would be prohibitive.
Haul road stabilisationMines, oil fields, construction sites. Tolerates heavy mining and construction traffic.
Industrial tank basal reinforcementPetrochemical oil terminals, marsh tanks, water reservoirs.
Railway ballast and sub-ballast stabilisationTrack bed reinforcement reducing ballast attrition and extending track maintenance cycle.
Project economics

What it saves.

  • Granular base thickness reduction 25-50 percent. Same or higher design CBR achieved with less aggregate. Saves cost of aggregate, transport, placement.
  • Subgrade improvement avoidance. Where the alternative would be soil replacement, lime stabilisation, or PVD + consolidation period, StrataBase plus reduced granular section may eliminate the need entirely for low-criticality projects.
  • Extended maintenance cycle. Reduced stress on subgrade plus reinforced base extends structural pavement life, reducing through-life maintenance.
  • Construction time reduction. Less aggregate to place plus avoidance of subgrade improvement period accelerates programme.
  • Trafficking over otherwise unusable subgrade. Supports construction traffic where unreinforced subgrade would rut and bog.

Many Malaysian projects use both: StrataBase under the road or platform base, StrataGrid in the retaining wall or RSS behind. See StrataGrid for vertical wall and slope reinforcement.
