Soil nailing design and build in Malaysia.
Infraconcrete Construction Sdn Bhd delivers turnkey soil nailing design and build (EPC) across Malaysia. Geotechnical engineering responsibility from project report to as-built handover, plus high-yield steel bar supply (Y20-Y32, threadbar 25-40 mm, hollow bar R32/R38/R51/R76), plus drilling + grouting, plus shotcrete + welded mesh facing, plus testing programme (investigation + suitability + acceptance + proof + creep per BS 8081 + BS 8006-2), plus on-site QA. Five applications: cut slope, top-down basement, distressed slope remediation, road widening, bridge abutment soil nail wall. Federal corridor experience: EKVE (450,000 m squared protected), ECRL Section 3.
Where this delivery model delivers most value.
Cut slopes greater than 4 m
Standard hillside cut: soil nailing + shotcrete + welded mesh facing + drainage. BS 8006-2 + FHWA-NHI-14-007 + JKR Slope Engineering Manual. Galvanised steel typical for residential / commercial; DCP for federal corridor.
Top-down basement excavation
Commercial basements, MRT/LRT cut-and-cover stations, dense urban hillside basements. Basement perimeter cut in 1.5-2 m lifts top-down with nails and shotcrete before each lift below. Avoids sheet pile vibration that damages neighbours.
Distressed slope remediation
Existing slope showing visible movement, cracks, post-monsoon distress. Rapid design + interim stabilisation + permanent soil nailing + shotcrete + drainage. PI insurance on design.
Road widening at toe of cut
Sequential staged works with traffic management coordination. Soil nailing into existing slope from base. Staged closures, lane management. Live-traffic working method.
Bridge abutment soil nail wall
Permanent bridge abutment retention or toe stabilisation for highway/rail corridor widening. Higher working load (200-400 kN per nail), permanent DCP corrosion protection, concrete panel facing for aesthetic.
What governs the design.

What the design actually covers.
- Slope stability analysis: limit equilibrium (Bishop, Spencer, Janbu) on multiple slip surfaces. Nail tensile capacity added as resisting force on slip surface. Pre- and post-intervention factor of safety. Target greater than 1.5 long-term per BS 8006-2 / JKR.
- Nail layout optimisation: length (6-15 m typical, depending on slope geometry and slip surface depth), spacing (1.5-2.5 m horizontal and vertical grid), inclination (10-15 degrees below horizontal). Iterated against factor of safety.
- Pullout capacity: bar yield capacity (Y20 to Y32 high-yield, characteristic yield 460-500 N/mm squared), grout-soil bond capacity (verified by site-specific pullout testing on sacrificial nails). Bond stress 50-150 kPa typical in Malaysian residual soils.
- Corrosion protection class: soil aggressivity test per BS 8006-2 Annex C (pH, resistivity, chloride, sulphate, redox). Drives selection of sacrificial steel (least aggressive, design life less than 30 years), galvanised steel (mild aggressivity), or DCP (aggressive ground, design life over 30-50 years, federal corridor standard).
Five tests per BS 8081 Table 7.
| Test type | Purpose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Investigation | Loaded to failure pre-production to verify grout-soil bond and inform spacing | 3-5 sacrificial nails per site |
| Suitability | Confirm production technique works on actual site soil | 1 in 30 nails typical |
| Acceptance | Proof load at 1.25 to 1.5 times design working load | 1 in 10 production nails typical |
| Proof | Project-specific frequency on representative nails | Per consultant spec |
| Creep | Sustained-load movement measurement per log-decade; less than 1 mm between 1-10 min log-decade allowable per BS 8081 Table 7 | Selected production nails per spec |
All five tested in-house with calibrated load cells, digital data logging, ISO 9001:2015 traceable records. Test reports submitted to consultant for sign-off before subsequent production nail batch proceeds.
