01 / Five applications most suited to D&B

Where this delivery model delivers most value.

Cut slopes greater than 4 m

Standard hillside cut: soil nailing + shotcrete + welded mesh facing + drainage. BS 8006-2 + FHWA-NHI-14-007 + JKR Slope Engineering Manual. Galvanised steel typical for residential / commercial; DCP for federal corridor.

Top-down basement excavation

Commercial basements, MRT/LRT cut-and-cover stations, dense urban hillside basements. Basement perimeter cut in 1.5-2 m lifts top-down with nails and shotcrete before each lift below. Avoids sheet pile vibration that damages neighbours.

Distressed slope remediation

Existing slope showing visible movement, cracks, post-monsoon distress. Rapid design + interim stabilisation + permanent soil nailing + shotcrete + drainage. PI insurance on design.

Road widening at toe of cut

Sequential staged works with traffic management coordination. Soil nailing into existing slope from base. Staged closures, lane management. Live-traffic working method.

Bridge abutment soil nail wall

Permanent bridge abutment retention or toe stabilisation for highway/rail corridor widening. Higher working load (200-400 kN per nail), permanent DCP corrosion protection, concrete panel facing for aesthetic.

02 / Design codes

What governs the design.

CodeCoverage
BS 8006-2:2011UK Code of Practice for soil nailing (primary design code)
FHWA-NHI-14-007US FHWA Soil Nail Walls Reference Manual
BS EN 14490:2010Execution of special geotechnical works, soil nailing
BS 8081:2015+A2:2018Grouted anchors; soil nail testing per Table 7
BS EN 1997 (Eurocode 7)Geotechnical design framework
JKR Slope Engineering ManualMalaysian federal slope-works alignment
JKR-SPJ Section 7Federal road earthworks and slope specification
BS 4449 / BS EN 10080Reinforcing steel bar specification
BS EN 14199Micropile (for hollow-bar soil nail context)
03 / Four design analysis tracks

What the design actually covers.

  1. Slope stability analysis: limit equilibrium (Bishop, Spencer, Janbu) on multiple slip surfaces. Nail tensile capacity added as resisting force on slip surface. Pre- and post-intervention factor of safety. Target greater than 1.5 long-term per BS 8006-2 / JKR.
  2. Nail layout optimisation: length (6-15 m typical, depending on slope geometry and slip surface depth), spacing (1.5-2.5 m horizontal and vertical grid), inclination (10-15 degrees below horizontal). Iterated against factor of safety.
  3. Pullout capacity: bar yield capacity (Y20 to Y32 high-yield, characteristic yield 460-500 N/mm squared), grout-soil bond capacity (verified by site-specific pullout testing on sacrificial nails). Bond stress 50-150 kPa typical in Malaysian residual soils.
  4. Corrosion protection class: soil aggressivity test per BS 8006-2 Annex C (pH, resistivity, chloride, sulphate, redox). Drives selection of sacrificial steel (least aggressive, design life less than 30 years), galvanised steel (mild aggressivity), or DCP (aggressive ground, design life over 30-50 years, federal corridor standard).
04 / Testing programme

Five tests per BS 8081 Table 7.

Test typePurposeFrequency
InvestigationLoaded to failure pre-production to verify grout-soil bond and inform spacing3-5 sacrificial nails per site
SuitabilityConfirm production technique works on actual site soil1 in 30 nails typical
AcceptanceProof load at 1.25 to 1.5 times design working load1 in 10 production nails typical
ProofProject-specific frequency on representative nailsPer consultant spec
CreepSustained-load movement measurement per log-decade; less than 1 mm between 1-10 min log-decade allowable per BS 8081 Table 7Selected production nails per spec

All five tested in-house with calibrated load cells, digital data logging, ISO 9001:2015 traceable records. Test reports submitted to consultant for sign-off before subsequent production nail batch proceeds.

06 / FAQ

Buyers and consultants usually ask:

Can we do soil nail D&B on a JKR contract? +
Yes. JKR soil nail D&B is routine for federal road and government slope works. Submission goes through state JKR office plus project consulting engineer. JKR Slope Engineering Manual + BS 8006-2 + FHWA-NHI-14-007 govern technical content. PI insurance covers design negligence. EKVE and ECRL Section 3 are recent federal-corridor soil nail D&B references.
What's the cost difference vs install-only? +
D&B fee typically 3-8 percent of construction value on top of install cost. Construction cost band for soil nailing: RM 280-650 per m squared finished face plus RM 80-180 per linear metre nail (see /soil-nailing-cost-malaysia/). D&B value comes from design optimisation that often saves 10-25 percent on reinforcement quantity vs over-conservative consultant design without contractor input. Net effect: D&B often delivers similar total cost to install-only with the consultant's design, with the added benefit of single accountability.
How do you handle peer review? +
Peer review standard. Project consultant reviews submission, raises queries, signs off acceptance. Iteration built into design programme. Our submission includes full calculation backup (slope stability software output, nail capacity calculation, pullout design, corrosion protection class justification) so reviewer can trace assumptions.
Self-drilling hollow bar vs drilled-and-grouted, which do you design for? +
Site condition dependent. Drilled-and-grouted nails (Y20-Y32 threadbar, drilled hole with PVC casing during drilling, bar inserted, grouted): standard for stable soil conditions (residual saprolite, firm clay). Self-drilling hollow bar (R32, R38, R51, R76 outer thread diameter, drill rod becomes the nail bar): used where conventional drilling is unreliable (collapsing boreholes in loose sand, soft silt-clay, mixed-ground transitions at karst limestone, or where clean borehole cannot be maintained until bar installation). Working capacity 150-800 kN per nail for self-drilling. Design and build selection at design stage based on geotechnical report.
Do you do emergency soil nail D&B for distressed slopes? +
Yes. 24-48 hour mobilisation Klang Valley, 72 hours other West Malaysia states, 3-7 days East Malaysia. Emergency sequence: site survey + interim stabilisation works + rapid design + authority submission + permanent works execution. Premium on programme rate but routine scope for our crews. PI insurance covers emergency design under standard policy. See /post-landslide-remediation/ for full emergency response framework.
