GI tubular scaffolding, explained.
A working reference on GI tubular scaffolding (also called tube and coupler scaffolding) for engineers, QSs, project managers, and site teams on Malaysian projects. Covers pipe specification, all common coupler types, jack and base types, accessories, and the use cases where GI tubular wins over system scaffolding. All our rental fleet is to BS 1139 / BS EN 39 / BS EN 74 compliance. Design per BS EN 12811 and NASC TG20.
GI tubular specification.
| Property | Standard GI tubular | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Carbon steel, S235 or S275 grade | BS EN 10025 |
| Nominal outside diameter | 48.3 mm (industry standard, used worldwide) | BS EN 39 |
| Wall thickness | 4.0 mm (standard duty), 4.5 mm (heavy duty), 3.2 mm (lightweight, less common in MY) | BS EN 39 |
| Mass per metre | Approx 4.4 kg/m (4.0 mm wall) | Calculated |
| Standard lengths | 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 metres | Industry convention |
| Finish | Hot-dip galvanised, zinc coating 70-120 microns typical | BS EN ISO 1461 |
| End preparation | Square cut, deburred, straight | BS EN 39 |
| Marking | Manufacturer, standard, batch; usually painted band at pipe end | BS EN 39 |
The 48.3 mm OD is the global interoperability standard. Pipes, couplers, jacks, and accessories from any BS EN 39 / BS EN 74 compliant manufacturer fit together, which is why GI tubular has the lowest obsolescence risk of any scaffolding system.
Six coupler types.
| Coupler type | Function | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Double coupler (right-angle coupler) | Rigid 90-degree connection between two tubes. Load-bearing. Transmits vertical and horizontal load. | Ledger to standard, transom to ledger, principal structural joints |
| Swivel coupler | Fully rotatable connection between two tubes, locks at any angle. Load-bearing. | Diagonal braces, raking shores, tube connections at odd angles |
| Sleeve coupler (joint pin / spigot) | End-to-end butt joint between two tubes in the same alignment. Non-load-bearing in tension; good in compression for standards. | Extending vertical standards to full height |
| Putlog coupler | Light-duty connection between a putlog tube and a ledger. Not for principal structural load. | Attaching transoms carrying scaffold planks only |
| Girder coupler | Clamps a scaffold tube to the flange of a steel beam (I-section, universal beam). | Suspending scaffolding from existing steel structure |
| Parallel coupler (parallel sleeve) | Clamps two parallel tubes side by side. | Attaching ties to anchor plates, parallel tube reinforcement |
All couplers to BS EN 74 Class A (minimum slip resistance 10 kN per BS EN 74). Standard torque on the cup head bolt (double, swivel, girder, parallel couplers): typically 50 Nm. Site inspection by the DOSH-certified competent person includes verifying torque with a torque wrench at random sample.
Three jack types.
| Jack type | Function | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Base plate (fixed) | Rigid plate spreads load from standard base to sole board / ground. Non-adjustable. | Scaffolds on level, prepared surfaces where no height adjustment is required |
| Base jack (adjustable base jack, screw jack base) | Threaded jack with hand wheel at base and plate at bottom. Provides 0-600 mm adjustment to level the scaffold on uneven ground. | Most scaffolds on real site conditions; essential on sloped or stepped ground |
| U-head jack (fork head jack, head jack) | Threaded jack with U-shaped fork at the top (holds a timber bearer) and hand wheel. Used at the top of a shoring tower. | Shoring / falsework support of concrete formwork, slab support, beam support |
Base jacks and U-head jacks are typically 32 mm or 38 mm diameter steel shank, galvanised. The hand wheel is the levelling mechanism; the sole board (timber plank under the base plate) spreads load to the ground. On soft or uneven ground, double sole boards may be required.
The complete kit.
Scaffold planks (platforms)
Steel toe-board plank or timber plank (treated hardwood), standard dimensions 225 mm wide, 38-50 mm thick, up to 4 m length. Load class per BS EN 12811 (Class 1-6). Steel planks preferred for repeated use; timber planks for budget jobs.
Toe boards (kick plates)
Timber or steel upstand along the edge of the platform, 150 mm minimum height, prevents materials falling. Mandatory per BOWEC Regulations where any person could pass below.
Guard rails (hand rails)
Two tubes along the open edge: top rail at 950-1100 mm, intermediate rail at mid-height. Combined with toe board provides full edge protection per BS EN 12811.
Cross bracing
Diagonal tubes connecting standards to provide lateral stability. Pattern: every bay vertically, every second bay horizontally, or dense bracing in high-wind or heavy-load zones.
Ties (anchor ties)
Attach scaffold to building facade at specified intervals for lateral support. Methods: through-tie, box tie, lip tie, drilled anchor. Design per BS EN 12811 wind and lateral load analysis.
Ladders (access ladders)
Internal or external ladders for crew access. Industrial grade, BS EN 131 or OSHA compliant. Secured at top and bottom.
Sole boards (base plates)
Timber planks under base jacks, spread load to ground. 225 mm wide, 38 mm thick typical, length to span 2 base jacks minimum.
Netting (debris, safety)
Debris netting (fine mesh, catches small items), safety netting (coarse mesh, catches persons). Common on facade and painting scaffolds.
Where GI tubular wins.
1. Irregular geometry sites
Historic buildings, buildings with returns and setbacks, odd-shaped structures. System scaffolding (Cuplock, Ringlock, Kwikstage) requires regular bay dimensions; GI tubular adjusts to any geometry because couplers can go anywhere on a tube.
2. Access scaffolding around existing structures
Scaffolding wrapping around existing columns, pipes, equipment, or facades. Common on building refurbishment, factory maintenance, and industrial retrofit work.
3. Birdcage (underslung) scaffolding
Scaffolding filling the full volume under a flat ceiling or soffit, used for ceiling work, HVAC installation, sprinkler installation, lighting work. GI tubular adapts to columns and obstructions.
4. Independent and putlog scaffolds for facade
Facade painting, cleaning, cladding installation, signage work. GI tubular is the Malaysian industry default for independent scaffolds along building facades.
5. Bridge and tunnel access
Scaffolding on bridge piers, under bridge soffits, in tunnel linings. Variable geometry, often cantilevered or suspended configurations.
6. Formwork support (shoring / falsework)
GI tubular with U-head jacks supports concrete formwork for slabs, beams, and transfer plates. Design per BS EN 12812 (falsework). Alternative to proprietary shoring systems for small to medium projects.
7. Chimney and stack scaffolding
Tall tubular access around industrial chimneys, water tanks, silos. Often requires swivel couplers for radial geometry and heavy tie design for wind loading.
8. Repair and renovation
Short-duration jobs where fit matters more than erection speed: painting, plastering, waterproofing, roof repair, facade restoration. GI tubular is cheaper per week on short jobs than system scaffolding.
9. Heritage and sensitive buildings
George Town UNESCO zone, KL heritage buildings, religious structures. GI tubular can be erected with light impact and visual sympathy; system scaffolding looks heavier.
10. Mobile towers
Portable scaffold towers (built from GI tubular + castor wheels) for repeated work in warehouses, factory maintenance, and interior work.
Honest comparison.
GI tubular is not the right tool for every scaffold. System scaffolding (Cuplock, Ringlock, Kwikstage, Haki, Layher) wins when:
- Repetitive geometry on tall uniform structures such as apartment blocks and warehouses, where system components speed up erection by 30-60 percent.
- Fast-build jobs under tight programme where erection labour is the bottleneck.
- Very large projects where the system scaffolding capital cost is amortised over sufficient tonnage.
- Highly standardised client specifications that mandate a specific system brand.
For those jobs we refer to specialist system scaffolding contractors. For everything else (which is the majority of Malaysian scaffolding work), GI tubular is the right default.
