01 / What uniaxial geogrid is

One-direction tensile for structural reinforcement.

Uniaxial geogrid is a polymer mesh with high tensile strength in one primary direction (machine direction, MD) and minimal tensile capacity in the perpendicular direction (cross-machine direction, CD). The directionality makes uniaxial geogrid the design choice for reinforcement applications where the tensile load is in a known single direction: MSE wall (tensile horizontal into backfill, resisting earth pressure), reinforced soil slope (tensile horizontal, resisting slip surface), basal mat (tensile horizontal, resisting embankment lateral spread).

Most uniaxial geogrid in the global market is manufactured from polyester (PET) yarns coated with PVC for chemical and biological durability. StrataGrid is STRATA Geosystems' high-end range, supplied in Malaysia exclusively through Starwall Sdn Bhd. Tensile strengths 30 to 1000 kN/m. Manufactured by hot-drawing PET yarns through a polymer matrix, then bonding into a rectangular grid pattern.

Contrasts with biaxial geogrid (equal tensile both directions, PP material, used for road base granular interlock) and triaxial geogrid (three-direction load transfer, PP, advanced subgrade stabilisation).

Where uniaxial geogrid actually goes.

1. MSE wall reinforcement layers

StrataGrid 50-200 kN/m typical, horizontal layers in compacted backfill, vertical spacing 0.4-0.8 m, length 0.7H to 1.0H. Faced with modular block (StrataBlock), precast panel (StrataWall), gabion, or wrapped geogrid. Design per BS 8006-1 + FHWA-NHI-10-024. See MSE wall.

2. Reinforced soil slope (RSS)

StrataGrid 30-150 kN/m for slope angles 30 to 70 degrees. Slip-circle factor of safety analysis with geogrid tensile capacity added on critical slip surface. Vegetated face or geocell facing. See RSS.

3. Basal reinforcement on soft ground

StrataGrid 100-500 kN/m at embankment base over peat (Sarawak/Sabah interior, Pahang east), soft marine clay (Klang Valley alluvium, Pasir Gudang, Pengerang). Resists lateral spreading. Pairs with PVD for accelerated consolidation. See basal reinforcement.

4. Segmental retaining wall (SRW)

StrataGrid 30-150 kN/m with modular block facing (residential, commercial, township). Connection capacity per NCMA SRW Design Manual. Heights 1-8 m typical with proven connection systems. Architectural finish through textured block face.

5. Bridge abutment with reinforced soil

StrataGrid 100-300 kN/m for bridge abutment with reinforced soil approach embankment. AASHTO LRFD design alignment with bridge structure. Precast panel facing (StrataWall) for federal highway aesthetic. Federal corridor scope (EKVE, ECRL approaches).

6. Geotextile-encased stone columns and piles

High-strength StrataGrid (typically 80-200 kN/m hoop direction) wrapped around stone columns or piles for radial confinement in very soft soils. Soft-ground improvement combined with stone column or pile foundation.

Why PET and not PP for uniaxial reinforcement? +
Creep performance. PET creep reduction factor (RF_CR) for 100-year design is typically 1.40-1.65; PP creep is much higher (1.80-2.50+). For permanent reinforcement (MSE wall, RSS, basal mat with 100-year design life), PET delivers more usable long-term tensile per unit T_ult. PP biaxial is used for road base where creep is less critical (granular interlock mechanism). PET also has better chemical resistance and longer durability in neutral to slightly aggressive soils.
How is StrataGrid PET coated? +
StrataGrid PET is manufactured from high-tenacity polyester yarns coated with PVC. The PVC coating gives chemical and biological durability against the embedment soil and provides UV protection during installation exposure. Coated yarns are then bonded into the characteristic rectangular grid pattern. Coating thickness verified per manufacturer spec, typically 0.5-1.0 mm overall (yarn + coating).
What if the consultant has specified a different brand of uniaxial geogrid? +
Equivalence is the standard route. We supply an equivalence statement mapping consultant-specified properties (T_ult, junction strength, pullout coefficient, reduction factors) against the StrataGrid range. Submission for consultant approval; equivalence approval is routine when technical properties match. The consultant retains design authority. For projects where the consultant insists on a named brand: we can broker direct supply through manufacturer agent, though delivery and certificate handling sits with that supply chain.
What's the design life? +
100 years standard for permanent reinforcement applications, per BS EN ISO 13431 framework. Achieved by applying creep reduction factor RF_CR (typical 1.40-1.65 for PET at design temperature 20 deg C) to convert manufacturer ultimate tensile T_ult into long-term design tensile T_d. Other reduction factors (RF_ID for installation damage, RF_CH for chemical/biological, RF_W for joints) compound. Total RF typically 1.7-2.2 for StrataGrid PET in standard Malaysian soil conditions. Manufacturer creep certificates included with reinforcement-grade orders.
Do you handle pullout testing on production samples? +
Yes. ASTM D6706 pullout testing on production samples is included in supply-and-install contracts where the project spec requires. Pullout coefficient Ci verified against design assumption. Field-batch sampling at 1 per 5000 m squared typical, lab testing within 2-3 weeks of sampling. Results documented in QA package.
How quickly can you ship StrataGrid for a project? +
Standard grades (30-200 kN/m): Klang Valley stockyard same-day pickup for stocked SKUs, next-day delivery within Klang Valley, 2-4 days nationwide West Malaysia, 5-7 days East Malaysia.
