Drilling method by ground

  • Rotary (top hammer): standard for soil + weathered rock, fast in Grade III-VI
  • Down-the-hole (DTH) hammer: for hard rock (Grade I-II granite), straighter holes
  • Rotary-percussive: hybrid, common for mixed-face conditions
  • Sacrificial casing (water flush) drilling: for cohesionless soil to prevent hole collapse
  • Cable percussion (shell + chisel): traditional, used in soft soil + investigation

Productivity benchmarks

  • Soil nail (32 mm GEWI, 12 m, residual soil): 4-8 nails / day per rig
  • Rock bolt (25 mm threadbar, 6 m, weathered rock): 6-12 bolts / day per rig
  • Ground anchor (4-strand, 25 m, mixed face): 1-3 anchors / day per rig
  • Micropile (200 mm dia, 20 m): 1-2 piles / day per rig

03 / Grout Plants

Where the bond strength is made.

Plant components

  • Cement silo / bagged storage: typically 30-50 ton silo on large projects, bagged for small
  • Water tank with flow meter: chilled water for hot-day hydration control
  • Colloidal mixer (high-shear): Atlas Copco LMV 50/100, IMT MAGICAL, Casagrande Maxima - 200-500 L drum, 1500-3000 rpm impeller. Produces stable, low-bleed grout
  • Piston pump: Atlas Copco SmartPump, IMT IM3000, Casagrande - 5-10 bar pressure, variable flow
  • Hose lines: 25-50 mm OD reinforced rubber, 50-200 m run to drill rig
  • Mud balance: daily / per-batch density check (target 1.85-1.95 g/cm^3)
  • Bleed test apparatus, cube moulds: 7-day + 28-day QA

Grout mix QA

  • OPC w/c 0.40-0.45 (target by design)
  • Plasticiser 0.5-1 percent (lignosulphonate or polycarboxylate)
  • Target 28-day cube: 30-50 N/mm^2 depending on application
  • Bleed less than 2 percent at 3 hours per BS EN 445
  • Density 1.85-1.95 g/cm^3 by mud balance
  • Pre-construction trial mix and certified test reports
Colloidal vs paddle mixer. Colloidal mixers produce stable, low-bleed grout suitable for permanent geotechnical works. Paddle mixers (drum mixers, low shear) produce unstable grout that bleeds and segregates - acceptable for temporary works but NOT for permanent anchors / nails per BS 8081 / EN 1537. Specify colloidal mixer in the contract spec.
04 / Shotcrete Machines

Wet-mix and dry-mix sprayed concrete.

MethodEquipmentOutputBest for

Dry-mix shotcrete (gunite)Aliva 246 / Putzmeister DSP / Reed dry-mix machine + pre-blended dry materials + water at nozzle1-3 m^3/hourSmall / repair work, remote sites, vertical narrow strips
Steel-fibre shotcrete (SFRS)Wet-mix as above + fibre dosing equipment (steel fibres 30-60 kg/m^3 added at batcher)4-8 m^3/hourTunnel primary lining, high-toughness slope facing
Robotic / mechanised shotcreteRobotic arm (Aliva, Meyco, Putzmeister) on truck-mounted base10-20 m^3/hourTunnel primary lining at scale, infrastructure spec

Shotcrete mix

  • Cement: OPC + 5-10 percent silica fume (durability)
  • Aggregate: 0-10 mm graded
  • w/c: 0.40-0.50 (wet-mix)
  • Slump at hopper: 75-100 mm
  • Accelerator at nozzle: 4-8 percent (alkali-free preferred)
  • Steel fibre dose 30-60 kg/m^3 for SFRS
  • Target 28-day cube: 30-50 N/mm^2

Application

  • Standoff distance from face: 1.0-1.5 m
  • Application angle: perpendicular to face
  • Layer thickness per pass: 50-75 mm; multiple passes for thickness greater than 100 mm
  • Mesh installation between passes for thick sections
  • Rebound: 5-15 percent (wet-mix), 15-30 percent (dry-mix)
  • Curing: 7-day moist or curing compound
05 / Staging Platforms

Getting drilling rigs and crews onto the slope face.

Tube-and-coupler scaffoldup to 60 degStable platform for drilling rig + grout plant adjacentMulti-person, heavy plant
System scaffold (Layher Allround, Cuplok)up to 60 degModular scaffold for staged work; faster erection than tube + couplerMulti-person, heavy plant
Excavator-mounted basketany (vehicle-accessible terrain)Inspection, scaling, light works at height2-person, 250 kg max
Mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) - boom lift / scissor liftany (level-ground access)Mid-height inspection, finishing2-person, 250 kg
Cable-supported platformany (very tall / cliff-face)Specialist - rope access teams, drilled anchors1-2 person specialist crew
Track-mounted spider rig (self-platform)any (rough terrain)Klemm KR 805-3 G2 self-traverses without separate scaffoldn/a (rig is the platform)
Slope-platform mapping. Selection driver is slope angle, total face height, drilling depth, equipment weight, and access. For a 30 m vertical-to-near-vertical permanent slope (typical hillside development cut): suspended scaffold for upper half, system scaffold for lower bench. For a 60-degree 15 m slope: tube-and-coupler scaffold or system scaffold. For a 45-degree gentle slope: track-mounted spider rig directly on the cut face. Working at height + working from suspended platforms requires DOSH (Department of Occupational Safety and Health) certified scaffolders, signed off scaffold inspection records, fall arrest harnesses + lanyards.

What's the typical shotcrete equipment? +
Wet-mix (preferred): batcher / transit mixer + Putzmeister BSA 1005 / Aliva 252 / Sika-PM pump + nozzle + 8-12 bar compressor. Dry-mix (gunite): Aliva 246 / Putzmeister DSP + dry pre-blend + water at nozzle. SFRS adds steel-fibre dosing. Output: wet-mix 6-12 m^3/hour, gunite 1-3 m^3/hour.
What staging platforms for steep slopes? +
Suspended scaffold (gondola) for vertical to overhanging - drilling, shotcrete capable. Mast climber (Hydro Mobile, Saferise) for sustained vertical work on tall walls. Tube-and-coupler / system scaffold for slopes up to 60 deg. Track-mounted spider rig (Klemm KR G2) self-traverses on rough terrain - no separate scaffold. Selection by slope angle + height + equipment weight + access.
How is grout plant set up? +
Cement silo / bagged storage + water tank + colloidal mixer (Atlas Copco LMV, IMT MAGICAL, Casagrande Maxima) + piston pump (Atlas Copco SmartPump, IMT IM3000) + hose lines + mud balance + cube mould + bleed test apparatus. Mix: OPC + w/c 0.40-0.45 + plasticiser 0.5-1 percent. Target 30-50 N/mm^2 cube. Density 1.85-1.95 g/cm^3. Bleed less than 2 percent. Pre-construction trial mix.
Why colloidal mixer instead of paddle mixer? +
Colloidal mixers (high-shear, 1500-3000 rpm) produce stable, low-bleed, segregation-resistant grout suitable for permanent works per BS 8081 / BS EN 1537. Paddle mixers (drum, low shear) produce unstable grout that bleeds and segregates - acceptable for temporary works only. Specify colloidal mixer in contract spec for permanent geotechnical works.
