Engineering Tool · BS 8006 + FHWA-NHI-10-024

MSE wall preliminary sizing calculator.

Coherent gravity method per BS 8006 with FHWA-NHI-10-024 cross-check. Enter four inputs; calculator returns minimum reinforcement length L, number of geogrid layers at 0.6 m spacing, and design tension T per metre. Use for tender-stage sizing and BoQ. Final design must run full external + internal stability with site-specific data.

Preliminary sizing results

Inputs feed live; results update as you type.
Method: Coherent gravity method (BS 8006-1, FHWA-NHI-10-024). K_a per Rankine, T_max at each level = K_a × σ_v × S_v × f_T. Reinforcement length L taken as max of (0.7H, H-Z_top + L_e) where L_e is computed embedment. Recommendation includes geogrid grade band from StrataGrid uniaxial family (30, 50, 80, 120, 160, 200, 300, 400 kN/m). Preliminary sizing only. Run full external (sliding, overturning, bearing, global), internal (rupture, pullout, connection), and seismic checks before final design.
What this returns

Eight outputs.

  1. K_a (retained, reinforced): Rankine active earth coefficient by friction angle.
  2. T_max per metre: Maximum design tension at the base of wall, including surcharge load and partial factor.
  3. Recommended StrataGrid grade: Nearest StrataGrid PET grade (30, 50, 80, 120, 160, 200, 300, 400 kN/m) with 1.3 FoS on T_max for ULS rupture.
  4. Number of layers: Geogrid layers at S_v vertical spacing.
  5. Minimum reinforcement length L: Maximum of (0.7H, H/3 + 2 m) per BS 8006 / FHWA-NHI-10-024.
  6. Total thrust P_a: Horizontal earth + surcharge force resultant per metre run.
  7. Total geogrid required: Length × number of layers, for BoQ estimation.
Method assumptions

What this does not check.

  • External stability: Sliding, overturning, bearing capacity, global slope stability, seismic. Full BS 8006 + FHWA check required.
  • Internal stability: Pullout at each layer, junction strength, connection to facing block. Use the geogrid pullout calculator for pullout check at each level.
  • Site-specific reduction factors: RF_ID (installation damage), RF_CR (creep), RF_CH (chemical), RF_W (weathering) per ISO 13431. Reduction factor product typically 2.5-4.0 on raw lab tensile.
  • Drainage: Back drainage system (chimney + blanket drain) is mandatory for MSE walls in Malaysia under monsoon condition.
  • Facing connection: StrataBlock modular face vs StrataWall precast panel vs welded wire face. Connection design is grade-specific.
