For embankments on soft ground (marine clay, alluvium, peat). Lateral spreading at the embankment base is resisted by a high-strength woven geotextile basal mat. Calculator returns required wide-width tensile per metre and matches to a StrataTex HSR grade.

Method: Rowe-Soderman lateral-thrust component + BS 8006 basal reinforcement equation. Required tensile T_req accounts for the unbalanced lateral thrust under the embankment slopes, partial factored. Recommendation maps T_req to a StrataTex HSR PET grade (20, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 kN/m). For very low sᵤ (below 10 kPa), bearing capacity also governs and may require staged construction or PVD acceleration in addition to the geotextile.

Reduction factors
Lab tensile vs design tensile.
The StrataTex HSR grade you specify is the wide-width characteristic tensile (ASTM D4595 / ISO 10319). Design strength is lower because of:
- RF_CR (creep, ISO 13431): 2.2-3.0 for PET over 100 years
- RF_ID (installation damage, ISO 10722): 1.05-1.30 depending on fill aggressiveness
- RF_CH (chemical/biological): 1.0-1.20 in tropical saturated soil
- RF_W (weathering during installation): 1.0 if covered within design window
Typical reduction factor product for Malaysian tropical conditions: RF ≈ 2.8-4.0. So a 200 kN/m wide-width grade delivers ~50-70 kN/m design strength. This calculator estimates T_des automatically.
