01 / What HDPE geomembrane is

High-density polyethylene continuous barrier.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) geomembrane is a continuous polymer sheet manufactured by extrusion of high-density polyethylene resin (density above 0.940 g/cm cubed) into rolls typically 7 to 8 metres wide and 100 to 250 metres long. The polymer chemistry gives HDPE the highest chemical resistance, environmental stress crack resistance, and durability of all common geomembrane materials, making it the default polymer for permanent containment of fluids, leachates, tailings, and chemicals.

Manufacturing standard: GRI-GM13 (Geosynthetic Research Institute, Specification for HDPE Smooth and Textured Geomembranes). Carbon black additive (2-3 percent by mass) provides UV resistance during installation exposure. Oxidation induction time (OIT) measured per ASTM D3895 confirms long-term oxidation stability. Stress crack resistance per ASTM D5397 (single-point notched constant tensile load) must exceed 500 hours for compliance.

02 / Six core applications

Where HDPE geomembrane actually goes.

1. Landfill basal liner

HDPE 1.5 mm (60 mil) for sanitary landfill (MSW), 2.0 to 2.5 mm for hazardous waste. Above compacted clay liner or GCL (composite liner system per DOE Garis Panduan). Hot-wedge dual-track production seams + extrusion repair + 100 percent NDT. Geoelectric leak detection (ASTM D7007) increasingly specified for stringent compliance.

2. Mining tailings storage facility (TSF)

HDPE 1.5 to 2.0 mm primary liner plus GCL secondary plus leachate collection. For hazardous tailings (acidic, cyanide), double-liner with interlayer leak detection geomembrane. Project-specific chemical compatibility verification.

3. Aquaculture and shrimp pond

HDPE 1.0 to 1.5 mm pond liner for shrimp farms (Sabah/Sarawak), freshwater fish, prawn aquaculture. Pond geometry design (bottom slope for harvest, anchor trench at top, central drain). UV-stable for short installation exposure window.

4. Secondary containment for chemicals / fuel

HDPE 1.0 to 1.5 mm around tank farms, petrochemical secondary containment per DOE regulations. Chemical compatibility chart verified per fluid stored. Hot-wedge plus extrusion seam, vacuum-box NDT.

5. Irrigation reservoir and water storage

HDPE 1.0 mm minimum for water-only impoundments. Cost-effective vs concrete tanks. Useful for plantation irrigation and rural water supply.

6. Landfill cap liner

HDPE 1.5 mm cap over closed landfill cells. Often paired with LLDPE alternative where settlement over the waste cell is expected (LLDPE more flexible). Drainage geocomposite above cap to manage rainfall.

2.5 mmRM 40-56RM 50-70Hazardous landfill (double-liner), TSF (aggressive tailings)

Install rates (added on top of supply): RM 18-32 per m squared for typical landfill or pond geometry. Tight detail work (anchor trenches, pipe penetrations) priced separately. CIDB G7 certified welders, hot-wedge primary + extrusion repair, full NDT per ASTM D5641 / D5820. Optional ASTM D7007 geoelectric leak detection adds RM 8-15 per m squared.

05 / Seam QA programme

How seams are tested.

  1. Welder qualification: every welder certified per GRI training, IAGI, or project equivalent. Trial weld at start of each shift. Trial weld coupons tested in field for peel and shear per GRI-GM19 minima.
  2. Hot-wedge dual-track primary seams: 100 percent NDT by air pressure test per ASTM D5820. Pressurise central channel to 30-35 psi for HDPE, hold 5 minutes, pressure drop must remain within standard limit.
  3. Extrusion fillet repair seams: 100 percent NDT by vacuum box per ASTM D5641. Apply negative 25 kPa with soap solution; bubble formation indicates leak.
  4. Destructive sampling: typical one coupon per 150 m of seam length (project-specific frequency in BoQ). Coupon tested for peel and shear strength per ASTM D6392 / D7466 against GRI-GM19 minima (peel greater than 71 percent of film, shear greater than 95 percent).
  5. Optional geoelectric leak detection: per ASTM D7007 on completed liner before cover backfill. Energise the geomembrane with low-voltage current, detect current leakage at any pinhole or seam defect. Locates leaks across the entire installation area.
  6. Documentation: daily seam log, NDT records, destructive coupon results, trial weld results, welder certificates, manufacturer mill certificates per shipment. Compiled into the installation report for consultant sign-off.

07 / FAQ

Buyers and consultants usually ask:

Smooth or textured HDPE? +
Slope-on-liner geometries steeper than 1V:3H need textured HDPE (interface friction 0.6-0.8 vs 0.4-0.5 for smooth). Flat-bottom cells and shallow side slopes can use smooth. Verify with project-specific direct shear test per ASTM D5321 on the actual interface combination.
How is HDPE seam strength tested in the field? +
Hot-wedge dual-track production seams: 100 percent NDT by air pressure test (ASTM D5820, 30-35 psi for HDPE, 5 minute hold). Extrusion fillet repair seams: vacuum box (ASTM D5641, negative 25 kPa with soap). Plus destructive sampling per project frequency (typically 1 per 150 m of seam) tested for peel and shear against GRI-GM19 minima.
Geoelectric leak detection, when is it specified? +
Hazardous landfill basal liner per DOE Garis Panduan, mining TSF (high consequence of leakage), and increasingly on commercial landfill projects where the project consultant wants pre-cover leak verification across the entire installed area. ASTM D7007 standard. Cost addition RM 8-15 per m squared on top of supply and install.
HDPE vs LLDPE, when do I switch? +
Use LLDPE where flexibility matters more than chemistry resistance: landfill cap liners (settlement over closed waste), irregular subgrade, aquaculture pond floors with uneven topography. Use HDPE for everything else (default polymer choice). Most Malaysian projects default to HDPE; LLDPE used selectively.
Do you provide DOE-compliant landfill liner systems? +
Yes. Composite liner system per DOE Garis Panduan: HDPE 1.5 mm (MSW) or 2.0-2.5 mm (hazardous) above GCL or compacted clay liner. Leachate collection layer above geomembrane (geocomposite drainage + nonwoven protection). Cap liner system with LLDPE or HDPE plus drainage geocomposite. Project experience with DOE Cawangan approval pathway.
What's the typical install rate? +
Standard landfill or pond geometry: 800-2000 m squared per crew per day. Tight detail work (anchor trenches at slope crest, pipe penetrations, cell corners): lower rate, project-specific. Multi-crew mobilisation possible for tight programmes.
