Geomembrane for pond and landfill in Malaysia.
Two markets, one liner technology. Malaysian aquaculture (fish and shrimp pond, increasingly DOE and MAFI licensed) wants 1.0-1.5 mm liner that conforms to pond contour and survives 10-20 year service. Malaysian sanitary landfill wants 1.5-2.0 mm primary HDPE on a composite base with full GRI-GM13 traceability and DOE regulatory documentation. Both call up the same welding and QA discipline: hot-wedge dual-track production seams, extrusion fillet repair, vacuum-box leak test, air-pressure dual-track test. We supply and install end to end via Starwall.
Polymer and thickness by use case.
1. Sanitary landfill primary liner
HDPE 1.5-2.0 mm to GRI-GM13. Composite base (HDPE primary plus GCL or compacted clay secondary) with leachate collection above. Textured surface on side slopes for stability; smooth on flat base for welding. Standard DOE Class III non-hazardous MSW. Class II (industrial) and Class I (hazardous) move to 2.0-2.5 mm with double-liner leak detection.
2. Aquaculture fish pond (commercial)
HDPE 1.0-1.5 mm for flat-base commercial fish farms. LLDPE 1.0-1.5 mm where pond base is contoured or settling. Cushion nonwoven geotextile (300-600 gsm) above and below where the base has angular material or where harvesting machinery operates inside the pond.
3. Shrimp pond (semi-intensive, intensive)
HDPE 1.0 mm or LLDPE 1.0 mm on the pond base with the geomembrane edges anchored in a perimeter trench. Aerator pads with HDPE 2.0 mm at the aerator anchor points. UV-stable formulation important for the exposed berm sections above water line.
4. Biogas tank cover (CSTR, covered lagoon)
LLDPE 1.0-1.5 mm or HDPE 1.5 mm for the floating cover on covered-lagoon biogas systems. Methane-permeability rating per GRI testing required. Gas collection ports welded to the cover with extrusion fillet detail.
5. Process water and decant pond (mining, industrial)
HDPE 1.0-1.5 mm on clear-water decant ponds. LLDPE 1.0 mm where settlement potential is significant. Geoelectric leak detection (ASTM D7007) increasingly specified for process-water ponds with chemical hazard.
6. Water retention (JPS, irrigation, ornamental)
PVC 0.75-1.5 mm acceptable for cost-sensitive water retention with no chemical aggression. HDPE 1.0 mm or LLDPE 1.0 mm preferred for longer service life and DOE-licensed applications. Cushion geotextile above the liner if walking traffic or maintenance access is expected.
Five NDT methods working together.
A geomembrane installation is only as good as the seam discipline. Our standard QA approach combines five non-destructive test methods, layered on top of destructive trial-seam testing at start of work.
| Method | Standard | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-wedge dual-track (production seam) | ASTM D5820, GRI-GM19 | Primary production seam between panels; pressurise the air channel between the two welds, hold and verify no pressure drop. |
| Extrusion fillet (T-joints, patches, repair) | GRI-GM19 | Hand-extruder welds where dual-track is geometrically impractical. Always vacuum-box tested. |
| Vacuum-box leak test | ASTM D5641 | On every extrusion fillet weld and every patch repair. Soapy water plus 35 kPa vacuum; verify no bubbles. |
| Air-pressure dual-track test | ASTM D5820 | On every hot-wedge production seam; pressurise the channel between welds, hold for the specified time, verify pressure retention. |
| Spark test | ASTM D6365 | On details, penetrations, around pipe boots. Wire embedded in the weld; high-voltage probe sparks at any pinhole. |
| Destructive trial seam | ASTM D6392, GRI-GM19 | At start of work and every 4 hours per machine: 5 test specimens with shear and peel testing. Production destructive samples every 150-300 m. |
| Geoelectric leak detection (project optional) | ASTM D7007 | Full liner survey post-installation, before cover placement. Maps any electrical-conduction defects (pinholes, missed seams) at sub-mm sensitivity. Increasingly specified for TSF and Class I/II landfill. |
All results are documented in a seam map (every weld geo-located on a site plan) and a QA file (seam log, destructive results, NDT results, repair record). Handover package includes the full file plus manufacturer certificate of conformance per delivery roll.
Datasheet matched to the project spec.
The Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI) test methods (GRI-GM13 for HDPE, GRI-GM17 for LLDPE, GRI-GM19 for welding) are the universal datasheet language for geomembrane projects worldwide. Malaysian tender specifications routinely call up GRI-GM13 / GM17 property minimums directly. Our supply via Starwall provides STRATA-grade geomembrane with manufacturer datasheets fully mapped to GRI-GM13 / GM17 property minimums; we line-by-line check the datasheet against the project specification before submission so there are no surprises at acceptance. For projects requiring independent third-party verification, we arrange sample testing at an accredited lab in the standard 4-6 week window.
What governs landfill design in Malaysia.
Malaysian solid waste management sits under the Department of Environment (DOE) per the Environmental Quality Act 1974 with sub-regulations including the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005 for hazardous waste. The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 frames municipal solid waste. Sanitary landfill design follows the JKR / DOE technical guideline on sanitary landfill, which sets out a composite base liner system: primary geomembrane (HDPE 1.5-2.0 mm minimum) plus compacted clay or GCL secondary, with leachate collection and removal system above the liner. For higher classification landfill (Class II industrial, Class I hazardous), a double-liner with interlayer leak detection is required. Closure cover at end of operating life is a separate composite-cap specification (typically geomembrane cap, drainage layer, growing-medium soil with vegetative cover).
Pond design regulatory pathway.
Water-retention ponds (balancing ponds, irrigation, ornamental) fall under Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran (JPS). Aquaculture ponds (commercial fish and shrimp farms) fall under Department of Fisheries (DOF) and MAFI policy, with environmental sign-off via DOE EIA where threshold criteria are met. Liner specifications for both are typically HDPE 1.0-1.5 mm or LLDPE 1.0-1.5 mm primary, with cushion geotextile depending on base preparation. Vacuum-box tested production-seam welds and air-pressure dual-track production tests are standard QA. Leak detection layers are not normally required for water retention or non-hazardous aquaculture; they become standard only where the liner sits over a contaminated site or where the pond chemistry is hazardous.
