Geotextile dewatering tube for POME and palm-oil sludge.
Malaysian palm oil mills generate 1,500 to 6,000 m³ of sludge per mill per year across anaerobic pond bottoms, biogas tank cleanouts, and storm-event overflow. Mechanical dewatering struggles at this intermittent volume. The geotextile dewatering tube approach (sludge conditioned with cationic polymer, pumped into a woven PP filter bag, filtrate returned to the pond system, dry cake removed after 4-12 weeks) gives 25-40 percent dry-solids cake at a fraction of mechanical capex. We supply and deploy turnkey across Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, Johor, and the rest of Peninsular Malaysia.
Sludge in, water out, dry cake left behind.
The geotextile dewatering tube is a large pillow-shaped bag fabricated from high-tenacity woven polypropylene with an engineered apparent opening size in the 0.20-0.45 mm range. Three things happen in sequence.
- Conditioning. Liquid sludge (typically 2-5 percent solids by weight straight out of a mill pond) is dosed with cationic polymer flocculant inside an in-line static mixer. Dose is typically 1-5 kg of dry polymer per dry tonne of sludge solids, jar-tested on site to match your sludge chemistry. The polymer aggregates the colloidal solids into larger flocs that the fabric can retain.
- Filling. The conditioned sludge is pumped through inlet ports along the top of the tube. Flocculated solids stay inside; clarified filtrate weeps through the woven pores and runs off the catchment pad back to the existing pond system. A single tube takes multiple fill cycles, each followed by a rest period for the cake to consolidate before the next fill.
- Consolidation and curing. Between and after fills, the cake inside the tube continues to dewater under its own weight. Over 4-12 weeks (mill sludge typical), solids climb from initial 2-5 percent to 25-40 percent dry cake. At that point the tube is opened along the top seam, cake is removed by excavator, and the carcass is recycled or landfilled as inert material.
Why POME sludge is the textbook case.
Palm oil mill effluent is high-strength organic effluent (typical 30,000-50,000 mg/L COD, 18,000-30,000 mg/L BOD, 4-6 percent oil and grease, residual solids 4-5 percent) with a Malaysian-typical anaerobic + facultative pond treatment train. Sludge accumulates at the bottom of the anaerobic ponds over years, eventually requiring desludging when active pond volume drops below the design 45-day hydraulic retention. The sludge is highly biodegradable, slightly acidic (pH 4-5), warm, and very amenable to polymer flocculation.
Three sludge sources at a typical mill, each suited to the dewatering tube:
1. Anaerobic pond desludging
Every 3-5 years a mill desludges the anaerobic ponds. Volumes per pond are typically 800-2,500 m³ of bottom sludge at 4-7 percent solids. A single tube of 20-30 m length and 15 m diameter handles one pond per campaign. The cake is land-applied as soil amendment under a nutrient management plan, or composted with empty fruit bunches.
2. Biogas tank cleanout
Mills with biogas capture (covered anaerobic digester or CSTR plant) need a tank cleanout every 2-4 years. Sludge volumes are smaller (200-600 m³ per event) but the campaign is time-critical to restart biogas operation. A tube approach turns it around in 6-10 weeks versus 4-6 months for natural drying-bed routes.
3. Storm event / facultative pond skim
After storm events or process upsets, the facultative ponds accumulate skimmed solids and floating sludge. A modest tube (10 m by 5 m) handles event volumes of 50-200 m³. Set up as a permanent dewatering station, this captures the small-volume intermittent sludge that would otherwise stay in the pond system and reduce hydraulic retention.
4. Composite mill site programme
For groups operating multiple mills (large plantation groups with 5-15 mills), a centralised dewatering pad with 4-8 tubes serves multiple mills on a rotating campaign basis. Mobile polymer skid, mobile pumping fleet, fixed catchment pad. Lower per-tonne cost than per-mill mobilisation.
What one tube actually delivers.
| Parameter | Typical Malaysian POME sludge value |
|---|---|
| Tube length | 20-50 m (longer for plantation groups; 30 m typical single-mill) |
| Tube diameter (theoretical, flat width / π) | 10-20 m (15 m typical) |
| Holding capacity per fill cycle | 180-650 m³ depending on tube size and target fill height |
| Inlet sludge solids | 2-5 percent (anaerobic pond) up to 7 percent (biogas tank) |
| Polymer dose (cationic flocculant) | 1-5 kg dry polymer per dry tonne sludge, jar-tested |
| Filtrate quality (typical) | 200-1,000 mg/L TSS, returned to anaerobic pond system |
| Final cake solids | 25-40 percent (mill sludge); higher for industrial sludge |
| Volume reduction | typically 80-90 percent of inlet sludge volume |
| Operating window per tube | 4-12 weeks (multiple fills, rest, final cure) |
| Fabric specification | woven high-tenacity polypropylene, 100-200 kN/m wide-width tensile, AOS 0.20-0.45 mm |
Three site setups we routinely deploy.
A. Mill site permanent pad
Concrete or compacted laterite pad 600-1,500 m² with bunded perimeter and filtrate return line to the existing anaerobic pond. One or two tubes laid flat, polymer skid in a small shelter, sludge pumped from pond directly. Suited for ongoing 3-5 year desludge cycles. Capex absorbed once, low operating overhead.
B. Sludge dam decommissioning
Older mills closing legacy sludge lagoons (DOE-driven closure under new Schedule terms, or land-use change) need rapid bulk dewatering. Larger pad (1,500-4,000 m²) with 4-8 tubes in parallel, mobile polymer fleet, intensive 3-6 month campaign. Cake disposed under closure plan; lagoon footprint released back to plantation use.
C. River / drain dredging dewatering
JPS and local authority dredging campaigns (river siltation removal, urban drain dredging) need on-shore dewatering of dredged sediment. Tubes laid on temporary HDPE-lined pad close to the dredge spoil access point. Lower polymer dose (mineral sediment vs organic sludge), shorter cycle (2-6 weeks per tube), cake stockpiled for reuse or disposal.
D. Industrial / municipal sludge
Sewage works (IWK and local concessionaire sites), food processing factory effluent, and rubber processing sludge all dewater on the same technology with adjusted polymer chemistry. We support the technology selection and pilot test where the application is novel.
What we deliver end to end.
- Sludge characterisation. You send a sample (1-5 L from each sludge source). We run TSS, total solids, particle size, polymer jar test, and pH at lab. Output: tube sizing, polymer specification, expected cycle time.
- Pad design and construction. Catchment pad sizing, bunding, filtrate return line, pump and pipework. We can build the pad or hand the drawings to your contractor.
- Equipment supply. Tubes (manufactured to project size), polymer dosing skid (variable speed, in-line static mixer, polymer make-up tank), sludge feed pump (positive displacement, typical 30-100 m³/hr), all hoses and fittings.
- Commissioning and first-fill supervision. Our engineer on site for the first 3-5 fill cycles to tune polymer dose, confirm filtrate quality, monitor cake consolidation. Hand-over after stable operation demonstrated.
- Cake removal and tube changeout. Excavator-supported cake removal, fabric carcass disposal, tube replacement on the next cycle if planned.
- Documentation. Method statement for DOE file, sludge mass balance per campaign, polymer consumption record, cake disposal manifest.
From enquiry to first fill.
Standard mill-sized tubes (20-30 m length, 15 m diameter) typically lead 4-8 weeks ex-factory. Larger custom sizes lead 8-12 weeks. Polymer skid and pump are normally ex-stock or 2-4 week lead. Pad construction runs 2-6 weeks on site. A complete first-fill is therefore typically 8-14 weeks from purchase order to first cake. For emergency sludge campaigns (storm event response, regulatory closure deadline), we keep a small stock of mid-size tubes and mobile equipment on standby for 2-3 week mobilisation.
Pricing is per project; the variables are tube count, polymer specification, pad scope, and campaign duration. Send the brief and we return a budget figure same day.
