Why is PVC-coated more expensive? +
PVC-coated gabion has the steel wire coated in heavy galvanising first, then over-coated with 0.5 mm PVC sheath. Two-stage manufacturing + extra material weight = 35-50% premium over plain galvanised. Worth it for coastal, brackish water, urban polluted streams, or chloride-rich groundwater where galvanised steel would corrode within 25 years.
Can I substitute cheaper stone fill? +
Per BS EN 10223-3, gabion stone fill must be hard angular igneous (granite, basalt, andesite) or hard quarried limestone with minimum dry density 2.4 t/m cubed and maximum water absorption 5 percent. Soft weathered stone (sandstone, friable shale) spalls under wet-dry cycling and fails the spec. Stone savings are false economy; structural integrity depends on stone quality.
How quickly can you mobilise? +
Klang Valley same-day site response, 24 to 48 hours to first crew mobilisation. Other West Malaysia states: 1-3 days. East Malaysia: 3-7 days project-specific. Emergency mobilisation (post-failure or monsoon-distress response) has a premium but is routine.
