Bandar Ulu Kelang, Gombak.

Bandar Ulu Kelang is a hillside residential development corridor in the Gombak district of Selangor, in the wider Ulu Klang area. Our group delivered geotechnical and geosynthetic-related scope on hillside residential development in this area. The project illustrates platform-formation, retaining, and slope works on Klang Valley hillside terrain that is subject to the local-council Hillside Development Guidelines.

01 / Project context

Hillside residential in the Klang Valley.

The Ulu Klang area in Gombak district has long been a focus of Klang Valley hillside residential development. The area is subject to specific local-authority hillside development controls administered by Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya (MPAJ) and adjacent councils. The geology comprises residual soil derived from underlying schist and granite bedrock, with variable depths to refusal. Slope classification under the Hillside Development Guidelines is a primary input to design and approval.

02 / Scope delivered

Geotechnical and slope works.

  • Bulk earthworks and platform formation on hillside terrain
  • MSE walls and other geosynthetic-reinforced retaining systems at platform boundaries
  • RSS systems with vegetated facing where applicable
  • Slope drainage including horizontal drains and surface drainage
  • Erosion-control on exposed cut and fill faces
03 / Engineering observations

Hillside residential delivery.

Hillside residential development in Ulu Klang carries specific institutional scrutiny because of the area's history of slope incidents in the Klang Valley (Highland Towers 1993, Bukit Antarabangsa 1999 and 2008; see our blog for engineering reflections on the public record). Present-day development in the area requires careful slope classification, conservative drainage design, and where applicable post-construction slope monitoring per local council requirements. Geosynthetic-based retaining and slope facing systems align well with the regulatory expectation because they support drainage management and vegetated facing.
