EKVE: East Klang Valley Expressway.
The East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) is a tolled federal expressway in Selangor, approximately 39.5 km in length, connecting the northern and southern Klang Valley along the eastern hillside corridor. The route traverses hill country in the Hulu Langat and Ampang areas. Our group delivered approximately 450,000 m² of slope and geosynthetic scope across the alignment, working with the main contractor on multiple work packages.
The expressway and its setting.
EKVE was developed as part of the Klang Valley road network expansion to provide an eastern bypass around the urban core, reducing east-Klang-Valley to north-Klang-Valley travel time and easing the load on existing alignments. The route passes through hill country with significant cut and fill earthworks, multiple bridge crossings, and approach embankments at structural connections. The terrain demanded a substantial slope-engineering scope: cut slopes through residual saprolite, fill slopes on the route's downslope side, MSE walls for bridge approaches, and drainage systems to manage upslope runoff in the wet equatorial climate of the Klang Valley.
Geosynthetic and slope works.
Our group's scope on EKVE included slope and geosynthetic-related work packages totalling approximately 450,000 m² in plan area. The relevant work categories included:
- MSE wall systems at bridge approaches and retained-earth bays, using reinforced fill with geogrid and modular block or precast panel facing
- Reinforced soil slope (RSS) systems on the downslope side of the alignment where vertical retention was not commercially viable
- Slope drainage including horizontal drains for perched water and sub-soil drainage for slope toes
- Erosion-control measures on exposed cut and fill slopes
- Separation and basal reinforcement geotextile at locations where sub-base sat over weaker subgrade
The geosynthetic supply was channelled through Starwall Sdn Bhd under the STRATA Geosystems Malaysia distributor appointment held by our sister company. Installation was delivered by Infraconcrete Construction Sdn Bhd as the CIDB G7 contractor under sub-contract arrangements with the main contractor.
Design and specification references.
Federal-grade expressway work in Malaysia routinely sits within a standards stack that combines JKR-SPJ specifications, LLM expressway specifications, and international design codes. The geosynthetic and slope scope on EKVE drew on:
| Standard / code | Used for |
|---|---|
| JKR-SPJ Section 7 | Earthworks and slope geosynthetics specification |
| BS 8006-1 and 8006-2 | MSE wall and RSS design |
| FHWA-NHI-10-024 | MSE wall design cross-check |
| NCMA SRW Design Manual | Segmental retaining wall facing |
| ASTM and ISO test methods | Property verification for supplied geosynthetics |
| JKR Slope Engineering Guidelines | Slope geometry, drainage, monitoring |
What the project illustrates.
EKVE is a useful reference for any subsequent Malaysian expressway project facing similar hill-country alignment because it illustrates several recurrent themes:
- Geosynthetic and slope scope on an expressway is often the largest single sub-package by plan area, and warrants a dedicated specialist sub-contractor rather than treating it as an extension of generic earthworks.
- The integration of supply and installation under a single accountability point reduces interface risk. On EKVE, the Starwall-Infraconcrete grouping allowed a single point of accountability across the supply chain for STRATA-branded geosynthetic materials.
- Tropical drainage design dominates long-term performance. The wet equatorial climate of the Klang Valley puts wet-condition performance ahead of dry-condition design; this is reflected in the geosynthetic drainage scope on the project.

EKVE is a federal expressway project; the route, opening date, concessionaire structure, and scope are documented in Malaysian press coverage and government announcements throughout its development period. For the authoritative project record, refer to the relevant LLM and concessionaire publications. Our role on the project is described from our own work records and is consistent with our CIDB G7 registration and Starwall STRATA appointment scope.
